An Exciting Weekend-Decoupage AND Oilcloth
January 29, 2008 at 1:18 am | In Crafty, Decoupage, Sewing | 2 CommentsWhat a delightfully domestic weekend I had! My son was sick, which was bad news for him, but his lying around on the couch was good news for me. I took a trip to Michael’s to get supplies for my latest idea-seasonal felt wreaths-and ended up getting a bunch of stuff for other projects. aside: know what I did not get? sequins. why? because two different staff people stared at me cluelessly when I asked where they were, then sent me to two different places. neither of which had sequins. Are not sequins sort of the standard for arts and crafts? What gives? Anyway, I returned home to find that I actually had a big jar of sequins.
What I ended up making was this awesome decoupage frame, which I chose to put a mirror in and afix a ribbon to, to hang decoratively on the wall. This was a total impulse-I saw square frames for $1, that’s right $1, and thought “surely I can do something with that!” I’m really really pleased with the papers I chose for the frame–they came from Happy Kitty Bunny Pony. I used my regular old Mod Podge and my newly trusty hot glue gun to afix the ribbon. The mirror was less successful because it is not actually the right size so I put some ribbon around it to mask that. I’m going to see if I can find a proper 3 1/2 ” x 3 1/2″ mirror to fit in there, though.
Here is a closer view of the frame part.
And here is still closer. I love this creepy kitty merging into the field of green backed bunnies and lambs and robins.
I also made an oilcloth bib. I let my son pick the oilcloth and the binding, which is why the end result looks like something from the Red Hat Society. But it was his choice and he was quite adamant about what he wanted. Which is why it’s frustrating that now he won’t wear it, but I’m sure he will someday.

Both projects turned out so well! I love, love, love the frame! (And seriously, they don’t have sequins at Michael’s? What gives?)
