Happy Pie Day! (Parts I & II)
February 2, 2008 at 3:56 pm | In Cookery | 1 CommentWe are celebrating National Pie Day (Jan 23, but today is Feb 2-happy Groundhog Day!) this afternoon at our friends’ house. They have an annual party where everyone brings a pie and it’s great fun to see what people come up with. There is lots of pizza pie and all sorts of weird things on top. This morning I am presently making an apple pie to bring. Not too out there or creative, but I am putting gruyere ch
eese on the crust. Have you been watching Pushing Daisies? My husband and I like the show ever so much and ever since we saw one of characters adding gruyere to the top of a pie we have wanted to try it. So, I am. My alternate pie choice was a “grated apple pie” from a fabulous vintage cookbook, courtesy of Amy, called Good Housekeeping’s Party Pie Book. I’m still curious to try it as I can’t quite imagine what it will be like-egg in the filling and a buttery press in crust.
Meanwhile, back to peeling and paring my apples….
Here it is the day after Pie Day. Here was my pie before baking

Verdict? Delicious. I’m thinking I will ofter sprinkle a little grated cheese atop my pie before baking.
What else was at Pie Day?
a Cuban pie: the fillings of a Cuban sandwich baked inside a pie
a Hoagie pie (we were outside Philly, hence “hoagie”, not “sub” as I would have called it): the ingredients for an Italian sub put in a blender and then poured atop a pizza crust. Looked like throw-up. Curiously, you could taste the lettuce.
sausage pie: delicious sausage and cheese filled deep dish pie
Thanksgiving pie: a stuffing crust with turkey, celery, onion filling, topped with slices of cranberry sauce
polenta pie: a thin polenta pizza crust topped with vegetables, cheese, rosemary
pecan pie with peanuts and peanut butter
Snickers pie
my apple pie
a brownie pie that was rich brownie cake layered with whipped cream.
And we left early so we didn’t even get to taste them all! I heartily endorse people having pie parties and trying all kinds of wacky things. Just as long as you don’t have a pie eating contest, because that’s gross!

That hoagie pie sounds like perhaps the nastiest thing ever but whoever thought of it is a genius! So funny!
I think the cheese atop the apple pie sounds fantastic!
