A is for Apron

I made this whole apron today! I’m totally in love with it. You may recall my mom gave me A is for Apron for Christmas and I went out and bought a variety of fabrics to make some of the projects. Well here it is six months later and all flush with the success of Tabby’s dress I started this. It was very satisfying to make something start to finish in an afternoon. Also, although it was probably relatively simple it was very good practice for me in terms of following directions, pleating, and….making my own bias binding!I’ve never done it before and it was not too difficult. The hardest thing was that I used my rotary cutter and mat, which do have the markings for a 45 degree angle, BUT how can you see them through the fabric?? I confess to “eyeballing” a little bit and for once that didn’t come back to bite me (too much.) Also, I was unable to cut out one of the pieces on the fabric (though I swore I had enough) and had to do a little sewing together of two pieces before I could cut the one long piece. But back to that binding–I’m so proud of it and so pleased that I now know how to do this because I love contrasting trim like this on most things. I’m also very pleased with how the gathers turned out.

All in all I think it’s darling and I will definitely make this pattern again. (Remember, it’s a handmade Christmas-birthday-baby shower this year!)

Congratulations!!! It looks great. The bias binding really adds that professional and colorful touch.

Sounds like it’s time for cutting lessons! Because there will be no eyeballing of the hexagons, believe you me!
(Seriously though — you line up your long cutting edge along the 45 degree angle and then cut the fabric. You only need to see the cutting edge on either side of the fabric to know that the edge is straight along the 45 degree line. That probably makes no sense, but I love love love cutting and will be more than happy to come up some weekend to show you what I mean.)
The apron looks fantastic, of course! Great job!

I will take you up on those cutting lessons! I also need a better straight edge than what I’ve been using, which is a terribly unwieldy thing.

I love it! I am always thinking about making an apron, but I haven’t actually done it yet. You also did an excellent job with the fabric combo! It’s awesome and I love that apple fabric! I learned how to do bias binding for a small quilt project I did last year – it took me a bit but I made it work! It’s so exciting to learn new techniques. I really need to make more time for sewing, but I always end up spending my time out in the gardens instead of in Craftytown this time of year.

[...] This pattern is called “Psychedelic Squares”, which seems like a silly sort of name for what is really a very plain rectangular basic apron. This is actually a gift for my sister-in-law and I chose the fabric (which I love-do you see the birds?) quite a while ago. I’m embarrassed to say her birthday is in March! I’m pleased with the way it came out, though in all honesty I don’t think it came out quite as well as my “fruit tart” apron. [...]
