Garden Poetry

Last year Paul gave me a wonderful kit for making “garden poetry”–basically a make your own brick with letters to spell out words on them.  It took a whole year, but I finally used it! I can’t wait to make more of these.  I envision bricks with the names of herbs on them to put in the garden as markers.

The rain continues…the hostas are hugely uncurling…the peas are climbing like gangbusters.

Yesterday I got my craft on with my cousin (inspired by cleaning out and reorganizing the craft cabinet.) We did a little decoupage and it was so enjoyable that I did a little more today.  A simple little oval box to keep treasures in-I imagine a horsie loving girl would like it.  Yesterday’s project was a frame that Clark had me paint pink and purple and then glue a variety of dog and fire engine pictures on. Let’s just say it’s all him and not reflective of my taste!  Kate made a wonderful yellow frame with Tasha Tudor flowers bordering it and her little girl’s name stamped across the top.  A yellow gingham ribbon was its hanger.  I’m telling you it was so charming that you’d gladly plop down money for it in an overpriced boutique! (Alas-picture not available.)

Decoupage Bambi Container

April 22, 2008 at 12:36 am | In Decoupage | Leave a Comment

Here is a little tin decoupaged with images from a Little Golden Book of Walt Disney’s Bambi. These are such sweet pictures I knew they’d be just right for a baby gift.

I have to say I am not 100% satisfied with the way it turned out, in part due to the raised image right in the center. I always forget about that on these Ikea galvanized containers.

Anyway, I’m filling it with some sundries and I think it will be a nice baby gift. It’s always good to have a container around to put your stuff in!

An Exciting Weekend-Decoupage AND Oilcloth

January 29, 2008 at 1:18 am | In Crafty, Decoupage, Sewing | 2 Comments

What a delightfully domestic weekend I had! My son was sick, which was bad news for him, but his lying around on the couch was good news for me. I took a trip to Michael’s to get supplies for my latest idea-seasonal felt wreaths-and ended up getting a bunch of stuff for other projects. aside: know what I did not get? sequins. why? because two different staff people stared at me cluelessly when I asked where they were, then sent me to two different places. neither of which had sequins. Are not sequins sort of the standard for arts and crafts? What gives? Anyway, I returned home to find that I actually had a big jar of sequins.

decoupagemirror.jpgWhat I ended up making was this awesome decoupage frame, which I chose to put a mirror in and afix a ribbon to, to hang decoratively on the wall. This was a total impulse-I saw square frames for $1, that’s right $1, and thought “surely I can do something with that!” I’m really really pleased with the papers I chose for the frame–they came from Happy Kitty Bunny Pony. I used my regular old Mod Podge and my newly trusty hot glue gun to afix the ribbon. The mirror was less successful because it is not actually the right size so I put some ribbon around it to mask that. I’m going to see if I can find a proper 3 1/2 ” x 3 1/2″ mirror to fit in there, though.

mirrorcloseup.jpgHere is a closer view of the frame part.

mirrorveryclose.jpgAnd here is still closer. I love this creepy kitty merging into the field of green backed bunnies and lambs and robins.

oilclothbib.jpgI also made an oilcloth bib. I let my son pick the oilcloth and the binding, which is why the end result looks like something from the Red Hat Society. But it was his choice and he was quite adamant about what he wanted. Which is why it’s frustrating that now he won’t wear it, but I’m sure he will someday.

Cavorting Bunnies Wastebasket

mls-party-133.JPGmls-party-134.JPGI finally did the trash can for the baby’s room. I again used Happy Kitty Bunny Pony as my source and chose a page of little prints of old fashioned looking bunnies in baby clothes. The pictures are red and blue on a cream background. I cut them all apart and then glued them on in a diagonal, which looks especially cool when you see more than one side at a time. Because the basic trash can is plain white I thought it needed a bit of jazzing up and decided to add some paint. I did a flower on each side and tried to make it look sort of like those 60s-ish flowers (or possibly decals you used to put on your bathtub floor.)

Overall, I think it looks good! That’s two baby projects done and one to go…

Tomato Tin-the other kind

img_0827.jpgimg_0826.jpgMuch like the “tin o’ tomatoes“, this is a tin with cut outs from Cooks’ Illustrated illustrations. In this case the tomatoes are the pictures. I made this last year for Porkfest ‘06, and here it is on display at Porkfest ‘07. A perfect little vessel for picnic cutlery!

Tin O’ Tomatoes

We’re heading out on vacation tomorrow, driving to Ohio to visit some friends. Of course we wanted to bring a hostess gift, so we are bringing fresh Jersey tomatoes in this lovely decoupaged tin. img_0286.jpgNow, you would think decoupage is the homiest, boring old craft hobby ever. But get this–I had a freak accident this morning involving it! I was sitting outside cutting out these pictures of melons while my son played. I use a small very sharp pair of scissors for all my decoupage cutting. I was holding them in my hand when I went to put a fireman’s hat on my head (my son is very into wearing fireman hats) and I inadvertently swiftly stabbed myself in the scalp with scissors. I could not have felt more horrified or foolish. Head wounds bleed quite a bit and this was no exception. Blood was dripping everywhere and my hair quickly became matted with it. Fairly horrifying. However, it must have just been a very tiny cut because the bleeding stopped and I can’t even find the wound.

img_0285.jpgAnyway, for the this project I used pictures of melons from the back of an old Cook’s Illustrated. Their back covers always feature beautiful illustrations of different food types: melons, apples, tomatoes, mushrooms, beans, etc. All exquisitely drawn and labeled. I’ve used many of these for various projects and think they always look nice.

Pig Out!

August 10, 2007 at 12:22 pm | In Decoupage | 1 Comment

pig-out-notebook.jpgAt this point it probably seems like the only gifts I give are decoupage, but since I don’t want to have my whole house decoupaged it just makes sense to make things for other people. This is a recipe binder I made for my friend Schnookie. Not only does she like to cook and have her recipes in a notebook, but she is also a fan of pork and all pork products. Seriously, she makes pork and bacon kabobs, crown roasts with sausage stuffing, potatoes with lardons, etc. I think you get the picture. This awesome picture I chose for it came from a book filled with hilarious kitschy and terrible pictures. Look how happy this pig is to have himself cut in half to reveal the lovely ham steak inside him!  I hesitated for a long time about cutting into the book, but then decided that I certainly was getting pleasure out of it if I used it for this purpose.

Bon Voyage Tray

August 10, 2007 at 12:11 pm | In Decoupage | 2 Comments

img_0280.jpgMonths ago my friend bought a new house and I am finally getting around to seeing it today. (I feel safe posting this even though she hasn’t received it yet because I know she never reads my blog!) I bought a tray to decoupage for her and thought this “vintage” postcard display would be perfect for her. The images come from a calendar (I really recommend Graphique De France calendars both for fun and then the following year when they are out of date, for decoupage). I think the scattered look is very nice and it should hold up to carrying drinks and dishes, though I probably wouldn’t put food directly on it. In addition to the Mod Podge I used a clear varnish on top to make the tray more durable. Once I read about some great project for trays where you poured Lucite-type stuff on top, but I have long since lost the article, so the varnish will have to do.img_0281.jpg

My First Decoupage Project: Cachepot

August 5, 2007 at 6:38 pm | In Decoupage | 3 Comments

I’ve said “Cachepot”, but I think there is another phrase to describe these tall metal flower containers. Possibly French something? Anyway, you know what it is. A lovely tall container that looks great with a big mess of flowers in it. img_7752.jpgI bought a bunch at Ikea, knowing they would be good for decoupage. I think any of these metal containers look nice for a variety of things. This project was the first one I ever did. It came about because I had been cutting up gardening catalogs for a collage program I was doing at the library. I loved cutting out all these flowers and shrubs and then sorting them by color. When I saw what a lovely rainbow of flowers I had I thought it would look great against the metal and make a neat rainbow spiral. I sat in front of the tv painstakingly arranging my pictures, overlapping them, gluing them down, and could not have been prouder of the end of the result.img_7753.jpg I foolishly gave it away as a gift to my mother. Foolish for two reasons. 1. Because now I don’t have it and I still really like it. and 2. Because several months later I was at her house and saw it in the bathroom being used as toilet brush holder. My mother was not home at the time and I was tempted to just take it away with me and never say anything about I was so irritated it at being used like that. I never said anything but a couple months ago asked where it was because I wanted to take these pictures. She produced it (did not say where it had been) and ever since then it has been on display with flowers in it. I know we can’t dictate what happens to gifts after we give them, but honestly, a toilet brush holder? Ew!img_7754.jpg

Decoupage: The Lady Grabber

August 2, 2007 at 11:58 am | In Decoupage | Leave a Comment

A particularly nice and easy thing to decoupage is a small notebook. Everyone likes to have a little notebook to jot down grocery lists, thoughts, lists of books to read, etc., so they make nice little thoughtful gifts. This is one I made for my friend’s birthday. She is a quirky fun person and I thought she’d get a kick out of these bowling balls, especially the one named “Lady Grabber.” The images came from a calendar of vintage bowling ads we had last year and I liked the way they looked, little pictures floating on a clear cover.
