Stuffing is definitely better than batting. This is what it says on the bag: Poly-fil Premium Polyester Fiberfill . My friend's sewing machine does the automatic embroidery, so she was able to do the names for me. You obviously don't have to have that, but I thought it was a nice touch! The template and instructions are in the book Seams to Me (which, if it's not at your library, is definitely at your local bookstore). I definitely had to follow the instructions step by step, but my husband claims that if you know how a soccer ball is constructed it would be easy to do.

oh, other baby things? Well I've just done two baby quilts, three patchwork balls, and I guess that's it. My mom has made many lovely stuffed animals and dolls over the years, but I've never tried it myself!

I am frankly so pleased that someone not related to me is reading this that I love your questions! I used regular Poly-Fil stuffing that you can get at the fabric store or Michael's. That said, the last one I made I ran out of stuffing and happened to have some batting. I cut up the batting into pieces and wedged it into the middle of the ball. Not ideal, but it worked. If you click on the "Sewing" tag in the category cloud on the side you can see everything I've sewed. I pretty much made my first dress a year ago, and then this spring is when I started making things regularly.

You stuff it very tightly. It's a squishy ball and a few of the patches I used were made out of a knit fabric-those patches were kind of bulgy. But otherwise, you just stuff and stuff until it is as firm as you like it.
