Up Tails All!

Posted on

When I first read Kenneth Grahame’s The Wind in the Willows I was, for some reason, extremely taken with this song that is in it. It is called Ducks’ Ditty and my friend Perri (hi, Perri!) and I got a kick out of saying it.  When I saw all three ducklings today in the pool with heads down and tails up (almost-the water is not deep enough!), well of course I thought of it.  Our little ducklings are growing quickly and it’s crazy that they seem like grown up ducks already.  So, here you go in honor of Perri, the ducklings, and The Wind in the Willows:

Ducks’ Ditty

All along the backwater,
Through the rushes tall,
Ducks are a-dabbling,
Up tails all!

Ducks’ tails, drakes’ tails,
Yellow feet a-quiver,
Yellow bills all out of sight
Busy in the river!

Slushy green undergrowth
Where the roach swim–
Here we keep our larder,
Cool and full and dim.

Everyone for what he likes!
WE like to be
Heads down, tails up,
Dabbling free!

High in the blue above
Swifts whirl and call–
WE are down a-dabbling
Up tails all!
