Congratulations, Blackie!

Posted on

The blessed event has finally arrived. I came downstairs this morning and looked in on Blackie and saw that she had her babies. I think she’d had them not too long ago as they looked a bit damp still. Sadly one of them was dead.  I was not too surprised when I saw that in all she had had FOUR.  I removed the dead one and put the whole cage in our very warm bathroom to give her a quiet warm place for the other babies to perk up.  They appear to be doing fine.  I haven’t seen her nursing them yet, but we’ve only peeked in a few times and also she is still busy eating up the bloody chips.  Which apparently they do so that predators cannot smell them. We haven’t taken them out yet, but I did snap a couple quick pictures. Blackie herself appears active and cheerful and considerably smaller. When you see how big they are it’s crazy to think of four of them squished inside her!
