As my grandmother would say, Holy Hannah! 15 minutes ago Paul came running in the house shouting that I wouldn’t believe. In his hands was…a baby chick!!!! Our lovely Silver Sebright bantam, Quicksilver, has been sitting on 3 eggs in the garage for a few weeks. The three eggs were assorted and it’s not common for this breed to go broody, plus it’s January, so we didn’t think anything would happen. Well.
Paul carried the baby in thinking it is 20 degrees out and he almost stepped on it except that it was peeping and the mother was off eating with her friends. It’s dry and fluffy so not super freshly hatched, and absolutely adorable. Pretty tiny, too.
We returned it to its mother, who tried to show it how to eat corn.
PomPom chicken almost pecked it and another hen walked past briskly, knocking it over a little. Quicksilver eventually went back to her nest and the baby snuggled underneath her.
I’m pretty concerned that it will die, given that it’s the only chick and she seems a bit unattentive. But, you never know! Meantime, what an amazing surprise!!
